Krümwal
The Krümwal (also Krümmwal or Krümmwall ; Öömrang : Krümwaal ) is an earth wall , probably from the Viking Age . It is located in the municipality of Nebel on the North Sea island of Amrum in the Schleswig-Holstein district of North Friesland .
Location and description
The Krümwal extends over 1,800 meters in the Amrumer Geest . The west end is south of the Nebeler Windmill . In Süddorf the Krümwal runs south of the Öömrang Skuul. From there it leads in a curve southeast towards Steenodde . Its height is a maximum of two meters. To the left and right of the wall, apart from the school, there are green spaces. The best-preserved section leads east from the school and is around 500 meters long.
The purpose and date of construction of the Krümwals are unclear. A function as a defensive system or border wall and a development in the Viking Age at the end of the 1st millennium is assumed. The Krümwal is registered as a ground monument.
