Steenodde (Frisian Stianood, Danish Stenodde; German "Steinspitze") is a district of the municipality Nebel on the North Sea island of Amrum , which got its name from the Odde of the same name .

geography

Steenodde is located on the east coast of the island, around 1.5 kilometers east of Süddorf , two kilometers southeast of Nebel and two kilometers northwest of Wittdün . The place extends from the coast to the approximately ten meter high Geest and has about 70 inhabitants. At the key date of the census on May 25, 1987, only 8 residents in 3 households were found in the Steenodde group of houses. To the southwest lies the Guskölk, a mixed forest with dune and moor areas.

history

Steenodde was already settled in prehistoric and early historical times. The dolmen Steenodde and the 4.7 meter high Esenhugh, the largest Bronze Age burial mound on Amrum, bear witness to this . Near the Esenhugh is a Viking Age burial ground with numerous knolls. The 1.8 kilometer long Krümwal , an earth wall that runs towards Steenodde from the west, dates from the Iron and Viking Age . In 1721 the first house was built in Steenodde. It initially belonged to a Hamburg oystercatcher, later it became the “Lustiger Seehund” restaurant and is now the oldest residential building in Amrum. The second house in the village was only built in 1852. In 1810 the port of Steenodde played an important role in the Amrum coffee war.

Shortly before the end of the 19th century, the first Amrum landing bridge for freight and passenger traffic was built in Steenodde. For a while there was a small shipyard on the sandwall near the bridge. From 1960 to 1971, Steenodde was the seat of Amrumer Schiffahrts AG and home port of the Amrum ferry or - from 1968 - a car ferry of the same name, which ran to the port on the Schlüttsiel - Hooge - Langeneß - Wittdün - Steenodde line until around 1985 .

Economy and Transport

The main line of business in Steenodde is tourism. Today, the port is primarily used for handling fuel and building materials and as a sports port. Occasionally " crabs " are sold there.

A state road leads from Steenodde to Süddorf. During the 1990s, the town was served by bus for a few years from the Wyker steamship shipping company Föhr-Amrum , until operations were discontinued due to a lack of profitability.
