The Resolution 1 of the UN Security Council to convene the Military Staff Committee to its first meeting on 1 February 1946 in London was adopted on 25 January 1946 without a vote.

According to Article 47 of the UN Charter , the General Staff Committee should advise and support the UN Security Council on all military questions that are important for maintaining world peace. The committee is composed of the chiefs of staff of the permanent members of the Security Council or their representatives. Non-permanent members may be invited by the committee if the committee deems it necessary.
