The power station Camden (English: Camden Power Station ) is a coal-fired power station of the state South African energy supplier Eskom with an installed capacity of 1.6  GW . Camden is one of the three older coal-fired power plants that were mothballed for a while but are now back in operation. The plant is a shaft head power plant that burns the hard coal from the affiliated coal mine.

investment

The plant, located about 200 km east of Johannesburg near Ermelo in the Mpumalanga province , consists of eight 200 MW units that were commissioned between 1967 and 1969. The construction cost was 126 million rand . The construction of the 400 kV high-voltage network in South Africa began from Camden . In the 383 m long turbine hall there are six transversely arranged two-casing turbine sets from CA Parsons , a British company whose turbine division was later taken over by Siemens . The boilers are from International Combustion . The power plant has four 154 m high chimneys and is cooled by six 112 m high wet cooling towers .

In 1988 half of the facility was mothballed, the other half followed in 1990.

The sharp rise in energy demand led to the decision in 2003 to put three mothballed power plants back into operation. The project was called Return-to-Service , or RTS for short , and includes the recommissioning of the three power plants Camden, Grootvlei and Komati . In 2005, the exterminated Unit 6 of the power plant went back online, the remaining units followed by March 2010.
