The Kakanj power plant ( Bosnian Termoelektrana Kakanj ) is a coal-fired power plant with an electrical output of 578 MW in Kakanj ( Bosnia and Herzegovina ). It is located directly on the Bosna River , whose water is used for electricity production.
The power plant was built in several stages from 1947. In 1956 and 1960, two units each with a capacity of 32 MW went into operation. The third (1969) and fourth (1977) stages each comprised a block with an output of 110 MW. The seventh and so far last block was built from 1984 to 1988 in cooperation with the Czechoslovak Skoda works and has an output of 230 MW. The power plant has a 300 m high chimney.
Coal has been mined in this area since 1902, but it has only been used for electricity since 1956.
