The plant, which consists of six 800 MW blocks, is located in the Mpumalanga province near eMalahleni near the existing Kendal power station and covers an area of 1335 hectares. The supercritically operated boilers are approximately 115 m high. They are built by Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Africa together with Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe . The turbines and generators are supplied by Alstom.

The power plant is operated with direct dry cooling in order to save water. The capacitors are supported by 60 m high concrete columns. 115,400 tons of steel and 5,300 km of cable are required to build the power plant. The construction costs were estimated at 118.5 billion rand . In 2020 it was announced that construction costs had risen significantly and that full completion was not expected until 2023 at the earliest.
