Krajinský most (German literally Landesbrücke or Provincial Bridge ) is a reinforced concrete bridge in the Slovak town of Piešťany and a cultural monument. It crosses the Waag between Piešťany and Banka and is part of the 2nd order road 499 (short II / 499). On the headland between the main stream and an arm of the Waag there is a road connected to hotels and spas on the island of Kúpeľný ostrov . You can thus reach the spa island by car; Pedestrians can do this over the colonnaded bridge in town.

history

The bridge was designed in the 1920s at the instigation of the entrepreneur Ľudovít Winter and built according to the design of the architects Josef Činčera and Ivan Grebenik in 1930–1931. It consists of seven spans: the longest span with the arch measures 52 meters, the other six (four east and two west of the arch) are each 29 meters long. When it opened in January 1932, the bridge was named Most TG Masaryka in honor of the first Czechoslovak President .

The bridge was damaged during the final days of World War II on the night of April 3 to 4, 1945 by retreating Wehrmacht troops, as was the nearby colonnaded bridge . During the subsequent renovation, a sluice was built to stabilize the level of the river arm of the Waag. In the last decades of the 20th century, a steel footbridge was built on the north side of the bridge and the arch was reinforced with steel cables.

Refurbishment and the future

Traffic jam on the bridge

Until 2014, the bridge was notorious for its narrow lane, which meant that wider vehicles (trucks, buses) could not pass each other on the bridge. Therefore, one of the vehicles had to wait in front of the bridge, which is why traffic jams often formed and accidents occurred repeatedly. In order to at least partially alleviate the situation, a driving ban was imposed in May 2013 on trucks over 12 tonnes gross vehicle weight.

It was also decided to partially renovate the bridge and widen the roadway by narrowing the curbs . Funds totaling 715,000 euros were made available for this measure , of which 215,000 euros came from the owner, the Trnavský samosprávny kraj, and a further 500,000 euros from the Slovak government. For this it was necessary to impose a full ban for two months (from July 1, 2014 to August 31, 2014). The shortest detour (25 km) used a section of the D1 motorway between the Horná Streda and Lúka junctions, which was temporarily exempt from the general vignette requirement during the full closure.

In the long term, the unsatisfactory traffic situation is to be resolved by a new bridge in the course of the Piešťany bypass in the south. However, there is no specific schedule.

Boards on the bridge

There are two boards on the ramp facing the city: the one on the south side contains the names of the architects and the construction company (Müller & Kapsa, Bratislava), and the one on the north side the projected load. According to the inscription, a load of up to 220 hundredweight hundredweight (i.e. 22,000 kg) and a load capacity of up to 500 kg / m² is permissible.
