Life

Diedrich Osterhoff came from a farm in the Sauerland, attended elementary school in Landhausen, then the Reformrealgymnasium in Hemer up to the Abitur certificate and had to do two years of military service. From 1945 to 1947 he underwent an agricultural apprenticeship and then studied until 1951 at the agricultural faculty of the former University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Gießen , graduating as a qualified farmer . During his studies he became a member of the Germania Gießen fraternity in 1948/49 . This was followed by a stay abroad with Ivar Johansson at Uppsala University , in order to become familiar with new perspectives on breeding planning and breeding value estimation . On the basis of these findings, he prepared his dissertation and received his doctorate in 1956 at the agricultural faculty of the Justus Liebig University of Giessen. agr.

Osterhoff then began his scientific career in the animal breeding and milk production department at the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) in Irene, where he set up a blood group laboratory for farm animals. He then moved to the University of Veterinary Medicine in Onderstepoort near Pretoria, where in 1963 he became professor of animal breeding and husbandry and head of the relevant institute. In 1968 he received his doctorate again with a thesis on immunogenetic studies on South African cattle. In 1990 he retired.

The focus of his scientific work in South Africa was

  • Blood groups and genetic markers in animals
  • Chromosomal studies in animals
  • Ethological studies on animals
  • Veterinary issues of animal nutrition
  • Human-animal-environment interactions

Osterhoff has set up an institute at the university in Onderstepoort, which is of great importance for animal production and for the scientific training of veterinarians in the Republic of South Africa and which has been recognized both nationally and internationally. The extensive work resulted in over 240 scientific publications and reports. He has received visiting professorships in Mozambique, Belgium, Finland, South America and the Federal Republic of Germany, and several visiting scholars from different countries have worked at his institute.

As early as 1952, he joined the German Society for Zuchtungskunde (DGfZ) and was in constant contact with it even during the years he lived abroad. He was also a founding member of the South African Society for Veterinary Medicine. In 1992 he was honored as an honorary member for his achievements and the long association with the DGfZ.
