history

The castle was first mentioned by the lord of the castle Petar Veliković in 1237 and in 1334 with reference to the Church of St. Mihovila in Velica and Velica Regalis . The lord of the castle in 1480 is Ban Ladislav von Egervara . At the end of the 15th century the owners are the noble Kanižaji family and then the Bane Franjo Berislavić Grabarski , Ivan Banića (Banffyja), Petar Berislavić and again Ivan Banića. Christoph Frankopan probably also used Kraljeva Velika as his base for wars. Ivan Banića was only able to recapture the castle after his death.

The strategic importance increased in 1537 when Požega fell to the Turks . Due to ongoing attacks by the Ottoman army, almost all local farmers fled to Hungary. For this time and despite the long war years, one assumes a densely populated area with 10,000 to 12,000 people.

Until 1544 the military border of the Ottoman Empire was at Kraljeva Velika. This year the Ottomans took over the festivals.

During the time of the Croatia war large parts of Western Slavonia part of the Republic of Serbian Krajina were Kraljeva Velika was consistently under Croatian control.
