Bethanien Hospital in the early days

history

The Bethanien Hospital Foundation for the County of Moers was established in 1852 with the participation of Friedrich Wilhelm IV .

The first hospital was temporarily set up in the Tervoort house in 1856 , until a new building could be moved into in 1859 on what would later be the Ostring, in which two deaconesses from Kaiserswerth looked after the sick. In 1874 an epidemic house was built in the garden . In 1883 the facility had a capacity of 35–40 beds.

After the medical and hygienic standards were criticized in the following years, at the end of 1907, with the support of the Rheinpreußen colliery, a new hospital was set up on Fünderich with an operating theater, X-ray equipment, elevators and central heating, which in 1908 had around 100 beds.

In the following decades, the hospital was expanded several times both structurally and with various medical departments before it was destroyed in 1944 as a result of the Second World War.

It reopened in 1946, initially with only 15 beds, although there were significant expansions in terms of capacity and departments in the following years. A new sister house and a farm building were added as early as 1949, followed by further measures in the following decades. A new ward building was opened in 1992 and a children's hospital was opened in the early 2000s.
