Spearmint , also spearmint oil , or spearmint oil is an essential oil selected from the spearmint ( Mentha spicata ) is obtained and in the cosmetics, medicine, in food and as insecticide is used.
Manufacturing
Fresh, aerial parts or even the ground dried leaves of spearmint in a will for the production of Krauseminzöls Clevenger apparatus of a steam distillation subjected. The distilled oil is dried (e.g. over anhydrous sodium sulfate ) and filtered .
composition
The spearmint oil consists mainly of ( R ) - (-) - carvone (59.5–63.2%), which gives the oil its characteristic odor. In addition to ( R ) - (-) - carvone, it also contains other monoterpenes (9.1–10.4%, including menthol and menthone ) and also sesquiterpenes (6.1–8.3%). Overall, the main components of the oil are terpenes (approx. 80%). Among these also should Dihydrocarveolacetat , also the acetate of dihydro cuminalkohols be additionally significant for the characteristic aroma.
The oil also contains limonene (10.4–9.1%), borneol (4.8–1.5%), linalool (0.7–3.1%) and 1,8-cineole (6.4– 3.5%).
properties
Spearmint oil has an antimicrobial effect. In vitro , the inhibition of growth against dermatophytes (e.g. Epidermophyton floccosum and Trichophyton rubrum ) should be emphasized, where the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) is around 500 ppm. Yeasts, molds and gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria are also inhibited in their growth.
use
Spearmint oil is used in many areas.
insecticide
Spearmint oil is successfully used as a larvicide against mosquitoes. It is an environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic insecticides. The oil is also used effectively against moths in pest control.
medicine
Traditionally, spearmint oil is used in medicine for ailments such as fever, headache, nervousness and indigestion. The use of the oil in the treatment of gout and as an anti-emetic is being researched.
Cosmetics
Spearmint oil is used as a flavoring agent ("spearmint") in toothpaste. It is also used as a fragrance in perfumes, shampoos and soaps.
Food
Spearmint oil is used as an ingredient for flavoring baked goods, confectionery and beverages, and as a flavoring in chewing gum.
pharmacy
Spearmint oil is also used to flavor medicinal products (e.g. orodispersible tablets).
