Preusslitz district ditch

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Preußlitz district moat is a Late Bronze Age circular moat near Preusslitz , a district of Bernburg (Saale) in the Salzland district , Saxony-Anhalt .

Research history

The system was discovered during an aerial survey by the State Office for Archeology and Monument Preservation Saxony-Anhalt . In 2003 the extreme southern area was cut during excavations in advance of the construction of a natural gas line . In 2005 a test excavation was carried out by the Institute for Art History and Archeology of Europe at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg under the direction of André Spatzier . The excavation took place on an area of 350 m² in the north of the facility.

Findings

The facility consists of three trenches with diameters of 100 m, 50 m and 40 m. The middle and inner trenches overlap in the west. All three trenches were built as bottom trenches, with the bottoms all very narrow and the profiles almost V-shaped. The outer trench has a preserved depth between 1.0 m and 1.3 m and a width between 3.0 m and 3.2 m. The middle one has a depth between 0.6 m and 1.0 m and a width between 2.0 m and 3.1 m. The inner and smallest trench has a depth of 0.1 m to 0.3 m and a width between 0.8 m and 1.3 m. All trenches were filled with dark brown humus , the outer one also had gravel deposits in the lower area . A wooden palisade was found on the western inner side of the inner trench . The inner ditch also had a passage to the northwest. It is still unclear whether the other two trenches also had passages. The inner and outer trenches are approximately circular, while the middle one is oval. It may represent a subsequent expansion of the system.

Numerous pits were found in the entire area of the facility. Settlement structures were identified immediately south of the circular moat.

Finds

Bones and late Bronze Age ceramics, some with horizontal grooves, come from the trenches. Late Bronze Age ceramics were also found in the pits.

Dating

By means of the radiocarbon method, some of the boils could be dated to 1420–1020 cal. BC, with the bones from the central trench being somewhat younger, which suggests a subsequent expansion. The complex can be assigned to the Saale estuary group both through the absolute dating and through the ceramic .
