The Cretan Lecokia ( Lecokia cretica ) is a species of the genus Lecokia and thus of the umbelliferae family (Apiaceae). It is the only species in the genus Lecokia .
description
The Cretan Lecokie is a perennial plant that is 40–100 centimeters high. It is glabrous, with a ribbed stem, and has single to double-pinnate or threefold, opposite leaves. The toothed to serrated or lobed to cut and pointed leaf sections are egg-shaped. The terminal double umbels are about 6–10-rayed with fixed rays, the umbels have little or no bracts and the umbels have a few bracts. The flowers are white. The chopped-prickly and ribbed fissure fruits , with a carpophor , are egg-shaped, up to 15 millimeters long, somewhat compressed and short beaked . They have some oil cells (vittae).
The flowering period is March to May.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.
distribution
Lecokia cretica occurs in Crete , Cyprus, in the Aegean Sea and in Western Asia to Iran . It thrives on streams, in evergreen forests and in bushes.
Taxonomy
The Cretan Lecokie was by Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck in Encycl. 1: 259, first described as Cachrys cretica in 1783 . It was named Lecokia cretica (Lam.) DC by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle . in Coll. Mém. 5: 75, placed in the genus Lecokia newly established by him in 1829 .
