The essay of the wayside shrine in Astheim

The crucifixion shrine from 1597 is a torture in the Volkach district of Astheim in Lower Franconia. It was built as a so-called monolith shrine in the course of the Counter Reformation .

history

The so-called monolithic wayside shrines shaped the region around Schweinfurt during the Counter Reformation . The Würzburg prince-bishops promoted the erection of these religious monuments throughout the diocese. The reason for this was, among other things, the spread of Lutheran teaching and the turning away from the old faith by the Free Imperial City of Schweinfurt. The wayside shrine is classified as an architectural monument by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments .

The Astheim wayside shrine was created by a stonemason who worked several of these wayside shrines between Bad Kissingen and Volkach . This emerges from the traditional stonemason's mark, which identifies the Astheim stick as the first piece in a series. It was created in 1597 and thus fell under the government of Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn . The torture was donated by "Jorg den ..." and his wife Dorothea.

description

The monolithic wayside shrines all have a similar appearance. The rectangular, massive columns merge into a block-like headboard. All of them were made from a single stone. The base has a square base, which is often heavily bevelled in the upper area. Most of the sticks are decorated with coats of arms . In a large majority the depictions of crucifixion scenes predominate in the essay.

The wayside shrine in Astheim depicts a crucifixion of Christ. In the right and left cartouches the resurrection of Jesus and Saint Peter are shown. The coats of arms below show a male figure (center), an oath hand (right) and the Astheim coat of arms (left). An inscription on the back reads: "1597 I Jorg den ... gell alhie vnd do rothea his ehl housewife have got the picture to praise and before he dnet our souls for use here and she is different in god".
