The crucifixion group at the new location in front of the village fountain

The crucifixion group in front of the Johanneskirche in Escherndorf in Lower Franconia in the Kitzingen district represents a monumental execution of the passion motif of Christ . Today it is located between the church and the village fountain.

history

The components of the crucifixion group come from different times. Originally the crucifix was the oldest element in the cemetery of the Escherndorf community. This burial ground was abandoned in 1633. The assistant figures of Mary and the Evangelist John were only created in the 18th century. The master baker Johann Wilhelm Bischoff and his wife donated the figures in 1750.

The two figures were probably made in the workshop of the court sculptor Lukas Anton van der Auwera . In 1973 the crucifixion group underwent a restoration, at which time it was on the north side of the parish church. In 1980 the figures were given copper canopy roofs as weather protection. Between 2014 and 2015, the group was renovated again and placed on the south side of the church on the newly designed village square. The copper roofs have been removed.

description

The group of figures is reminiscent of the crucifixion group in nearby Wiesentheid , which also comes from the workshop of Lukas Anton van der Auwera. The figures are not connected by volutes , but stand separately on a richly decorated rectangular base. The crucifix, which corresponds to the three-nail type, rises in the center. Jesus turns left and looks towards the suffering Mary.

The base of the crucifix is more decorated than the other two pedestals. In addition to the centrally mounted cartridge, two small volutes frame the base . On the left the suffering Mary turns with praying arms to her son on the cross. An inscription on its base reads: "Gott, / Der Schmertzhafften / Mother of God, and the / Saint Joanni have to honor / Johann Wilhelm Bischoff / Citizen and Beckermeister and / Cünegunda his married wife / housewife there in Eschern- / dorff these two next- pictures / let erect here / July 7th 1750 ”.
