The Kreuzkirche or Stadtkirche in Joachimsthal is a post-Reformation Protestant church building from the 18th century on the preferred hunting ground of the Electors of Brandenburg . The church is used by the Evangelical parish of Joachimsthal.

history

The church was built according to plans by the Brandenburg building inspector Eichler from 1735 to 1738 as a classical plastered building. It replaced the previous building of a baroque half-timbered church from 1609. The second city church of Joachimsthal was initially built as a transverse hall. As early as 1740 a church tower was placed in front of the middle of the south side of the church. This expansion gave the church the cruciform floor plan, after which it is named today on the one hand, and which is classified as a cruciform church on the other .

The church was badly damaged in the city fire of April 20, 1814 and was restored from 1817 to 1820 according to plans by the Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel . In doing so, the building was given a neo-Gothic shape in line with contemporary tastes. What should be emphasized in this context is the renunciation of the church tower in favor of the bell gable between two corner turrets. Another renovation took place during the GDR times in 1969/70: The church interior was first oriented towards the east, because the northern cross arm was prepared as a winter church and the southern cross arm as a sacristy .

On the horseshoe-shaped gallery is the organ with its classicist organ front , it was built in 1820 by the organ builder Johann Tobias Turley from Treuenbrietzen , but in 1909 it was heavily modified by Albert Kienscherf . The rest of the furnishings in the church interior were completely redesigned in 1974 by the sculptor Elly-Viola Nahmmacher following the redesign of the interior in 1969 . The Kreuzkirche was restored in the period before the reunification in the years 1987-1990.
