Upper Austria: Kreuzstein in Mondsee

The Kreuzstein is a boulder in the Mondsee in Upper Austria in Austria . It is located in the shallow water just a few meters from the eastern south bank, which here forms the border with the State of Salzburg , here the municipality of Sankt Gilgen , cadastral municipality of Oberburgau .

The limestone boulder is badly eroded , especially at its base, so that it does not protrude vertically, but overhangs around 1.9 m from the water. It has a diameter of 2.1 m at the top, but only 1.3 m at the base.

The boulder carries a vertically rising and around 1.8 m high Christian cross made of stone, which probably gave it its name, as well as a smaller inclined (height about 80 cm) pagan cross of animation made of iron next to it. There is also a geocache on the boulder .

The Kreuzstein also gave its name to the district of the same name in the municipality of Sankt Gilgen (fish farm Kreuzstein am Mondsee), as well as the Kreuzstein waterfall on the Altersbach.
