description

Back of the cross stone , 2012

The cross is 196 cm high, maximum 114 cm wide and 35 cm deep. The shaft widens down from 40 to 85 cm. The obverse shows a bas-relief with a figure of Christ . The out Burgsandstein -made Kreuzenstein stands on a currently overgrown stone plate measuring 105 x 170 cm.

history

The meaning of the stone cross, which was probably made in the 15th century, is unknown. According to legend , it is reminiscent of a battle between mercenaries from the imperial city of Nuremberg and troops from the Brandenburg-Ansbach margraviate . In fact, the First (1449–1450) and Second Margrave War (1552–1554) took place in the region , during which Eltersdorf was also devastated and plundered. However, a direct relationship to the cross cannot be reliably established. The name Schwedenstein goes back to another legend according to which soldiers from the Swedish War (1630-1635) are buried there.

The current location of the stone cross does not correspond to the original location of the installation. Until a section of the federal motorway 3 was built at the end of the 1950s, it stood about 130 meters further north on the western edge of the road to Bruck .
