Selkirk War Memorial

The Selkirk War Memorial is a memorial in the Scottish town of Selkirk in the Council Area Scottish Borders . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

description

The monument stands in a prominent position at the confluence of The Valley road with Ettrick Terrace ( A7 ). It was built in 1922 to a design by Scottish designer Robert Lorimer . A quarry stone wall with baroque balusters surrounds the complex built into the slope. The central element is the monument, which is located on the second level behind curved walls and is accessible via a few steps. In its tapering base with a square floor plan, a plaque is embedded that commemorates the fallen citizens of Selkirk in the First World War . Above it stands a bronze sculpture of Victoria with a wreath and sword in a round-arched niche. Above this, the monument tapers to an octagonal shaft with a Maltese cross at the end .

Bronze memorial plaques are set into the central wall on the first level . The flanking panels list the names of those killed in the First World War. On the other hand, on the middle plate, added later, the soldiers from the town of Selkirk during the Second World War are listed.
