The memorial was erected after 1918. It was entered in the monuments list of the city of Mönchengladbach on July 24, 2012 under No. K 097 .

location

The memorial is located on the northern side of Kölner Straße, not far from the confluence of Talstraße, on a plot of land lined with large trees. It is bordered by a beech hedge.

history

The memorial originally commemorates the dead from Sasserath and Mongshof during the First World War. For this, the design form based on the traditions of the empire was chosen. After the Second World War, the memorial was expanded, closely adapting to the traditional design (existing structure).

The memorial, which has largely been preserved in its original state, commemorates the dead and missing from Mongshof and Sasserath in its design, which was generally accepted during the period after the First World War. After the Second World War, the extension was adapted to the existing structure.

There is a public interest in its preservation and use for scientific reasons, in particular for reasons of local history.

architecture

The memorial consists of three rounded boulders . The middle stone is the stone erected to commemorate the victims of the First World War . A granite boulder rises on a chiselled artificial stone plinth , on the front of which a bronze plaque with the names of 21 fallen men from Sasserath can be read. The table is crowned by a steel helmet with oak leaves . Above the table the stone bears a paw cross ( Iron Cross ) with the date 1914, on the top there is an eagle with outstretched wings.

After the Second World War , the memorial was expanded with two small boulders. For this purpose, the concrete base was expanded. The small boulders flank the First World War memorial. The left stone bears a bronze plaque with twelve names of fallen soldiers from 1939–1945 from Sasserath, the right stone a plaque with three names of fallen soldiers from Mongshof. Eight missing persons from Sasserath and three missing persons from Mongshof are also remembered.
