The war memorial in the Zoo Park ( English War Memorial at Zoo Park ) is an official war memorial of the Republic of Namibia . It is located in the Zoo Park in Windhoek-Central in the center of the Namibian capital Windhoek . It was recognized as a National Monument on January 2, 1969 .
The memorial was erected on April 6, 1897 as a monument to the protection of the troops in "memory of the heroes who died in the war against the Witbooi tribe in 1893 and 1894", especially during the battle of Hornkranz . The approximately two meter high iron obelisk with an imperial eagle on top was prefabricated in Germany and shipped to German South West Africa . The names of the fallen soldiers of the Schutztruppe can be found on all sides of the obelisk . The monument is surrounded by a small fence.
