The museum opened in 1946. War equipment from the Battle of Overloon (September 24 to October 16, 1944) was initially collected and displayed on part of the former battlefield . It later received exhibits from across the country. In 1960 the museum received national status.

At first it was an open-air museum, in which the larger exhibits ( tanks and the like) were exhibited in a park-like area. In the course of time, these large devices were housed in buildings to protect them from the elements. In 2006 the exhibits from the Marshall Museum from Zwijndrecht were also brought to Overloon. In the museum's extensive park there are also sculptures by well-known artists who deal with the horrors of war.

Climbing park

There is also a climbing park on the site previously used by the museum. However, this has no relation to the museum.
