Josef Ulsamer (born July 4, 1923 in Nuremberg ; † December 15, 2008 in Würzburg ) was a German musician who specialized as a viol player and ensemble leader in the field of historical performance practice.

Life

Josef Ulsamer studied music and musicology in Erlangen. After initially studying the cello, he later devoted himself entirely to the viola da gamba . In 1955 he founded the Nuremberg Gamba College , which was later renamed the Ulsamer Collegium . From 1948 to 1966 he worked as a music editor at Bayerischer Rundfunk in Nuremberg, where he co-founded the show Musikalisches Tafelkonfekt . During this time, the folk music department at Bayerischer Rundfunk ( Studio Nürnberg ) was founded, and he took over as director. In 1967 he was appointed to the Würzburg University of Music , where he was head of the department for historical instruments and viola da gamba.

As one of the pioneers of the interpretation of early music on historical instruments, Ulsamer made a name for himself worldwide - also through numerous concerts, radio, record and television recordings in Europe, Africa, South and North America and Japan. He taught in numerous courses in Germany, Holland, England, Austria, Chile and Venezuela. A special concern was also the new music on old instruments with compositions by Pierre Boulez , Hans Ulrich Engelmann , Klaus Hashagen , Werner Heider , Hans Werner Henze , Mauricio Kagel , Rudolf Kelterborn , Karlheinz Stockhausen and Jacques Wildberger (partly for the Ulsamer-Collegium written). Josef Ulsamer was married to the Belgian harpsichordist Elza van der Ven-Ulsamer (1921–2012) since 1952 and had 6 children with her.

Artistic work

The Ulsamer-Collegium made music on historical instruments, mostly copies of originals from various museums and collections. The special style of the ensemble was determined by the fact that each player masters a whole range of instruments, e.g. B. vielles , Gamben , Rotta , Drehleier , Renaissance and the Baroque recorders , Schalmei , crumhorns , rauschpfeife , Pommer , bagpipe , syrinx , zinc , Renaissance trombone , Serpent , Psalter , harp , sounds , cister , Theorbe , Chitarrone , Pandora , Clavicord , harpsichord , Fortepiano , organ , glockenspiel , percussion .
