Kathleen Anne Kriger studied at the University of Oregon and then went into the diplomatic service of the United States , including several years as a commercial attaché in the US Embassy of Morocco . When the “war on terror” was proclaimed by her government after the terrorist attacks of September 9, 2001 , Kriger quit her job and opened Rick's Café in 2004 in the old town of Casablanca, based on the film Casablanca . With her investment in a Muslim country, she wanted to set an example for tolerance.

Kathy Kriger died in Casablanca at the age of 72. Madame Rick , as the regulars of her restaurant called her, was very important to American-Moroccan relations, as the American embassy announced on the occasion of her death.
