Kriwina (also written Krivina , Bulgarian Кривина ) is a northern Bulgarian village with 459 inhabitants (as of December 15, 2010) in the municipality of Zenowo in the Russian Oblast . Kriwina are located on the right bank of the Jantra , about 3 km before its confluence with the Danube . Svishtov , approx. 20 km to the west, and Russe , approx. 50 km to the east, are the next larger cities.
In the area of the village is the Roman fort Iatrus . The castle was founded around 310/320 n. Chr., And was for 300 years part of the Danube limes . In the course of the migration of the peoples it was transformed into a defensive village, as violent armed conflicts with barbaric invaders came more and more often on the border of the empire, as a result of which Iatrus was destroyed several times, abandoned and then rebuilt. In the 7th century the Roman army finally gave up the castle. Bulgarians founded a new settlement within the castle ruins, which was continuously inhabited until the 10th century.
