Kućište on Pelješac, in the background Korčula

Kućište is a village on the Pelješac peninsula , which extends into the Adriatic Sea 50 km north of Dubrovnik . The place is located on the south coast opposite the island of Korčula and belongs to the municipality of Orebić . It has about 250 inhabitants and is located at the foot of the Sveti Ilija mountain .

history

As finds show, the settlement took place already in prehistoric times. Kućište was marked by the Venetian cartographer Cornelli as early as 1640 with 30 houses on his maps. In the Middle Ages and up to the 19th century, shipowners and captains resided in Kućište. Its houses from the Renaissance and the Baroque , splendidly decorated with marble, surrounded by palm trees, pines and cypresses, still characterize the old town center, and some of them are uninhabited today.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the height of merchant shipping and thus also the height of wealth were in Kućište. Numerous shipping companies had a large number of sailing ships with which they traded. A three-part building complex from the 17th and 18th centuries, which the Lazarevic family of shipowners had built, is evidence of the prosperity of the past.

There are chapels and churches in the village. Above on the slope is the old cemetery from the 14th century and the St. Luca chapel, first mentioned in 1393, with a pear-shaped bell from 1422. There is also a golden church chalice from the early Renaissance. Not far on the slope is a votive church from the 16th century, which was expanded in 1884. The church of St. Trojstvo with a magnificently decorated portal was built in the baroque era. In the district of Zukovac there is the Gothic church of St. Lovro, which was built in 1335 and rebuilt in the 18th century; it is decorated with several oil paintings.

With the decline of sailing ships at the end of the 19th century, many residents left the place.

economy

Today the majority of the population in Kućište lives from tourism . Due to its location on the Adriatic Sea, you can practice water sports such as windsurfing and go on hiking tours in the mountainous surroundings.
