Tour of Cuba 1980
The Tour of Cuba in 1980 was the 15th edition of the stage race. It took place from February 18 to March 2, 1980. Overall winner was the Cuban Aldo Arencibia , who celebrated his third victory after 1972 and 1976.
route
The tour led over eleven stages from Holguín to Havana . A total of 1,576 kilometers had to be completed. Originally it was supposed to run over 1,700 km and also contain a prologue. But special circumstances forced the organizers to change the route at the last minute.

A total of 124 drivers started. In addition to 78 drivers from Cuba, participants from Mexico , the ČSSR , Poland , the USSR and the GDR were represented. The Cubans divided their drivers into city teams, the USSR and the GDR started with two teams. It was the first time that the GDR took part in a tour of Cuba. A DDR started Bernd Drogan , Hans-Joachim Hart Nick , Andreas Petermann , Martin Goetze and Thomas Barth .
Stages
1st stage: Holguín - Pinares de Mayarí, 100 km
The first stage led at 28 ° C in the shade on a mountainous route from Holguín to Pinares de Mayarí . The Soviet drivers determined the stage, secured the first three places and thus clearly took the lead in the team standings.

2nd stage: Around Holguín, 164 km
The second stage led over 164 km around Holguín. At temperatures of up to 31 ° C, the Cubans took the initiative and started several attempts. Edilberto Rodríguez and José Alanyo finally managed to break away from the field. Thomas Barth was able to follow them and after 70 km a larger group caught up. The stage was decided with a mass sprint from this group. The Mexican Ernesto Hernández won. Morosow, the leader in the general classification, crossed the finish line eight minutes behind in the main field. Sergei Suchorutschenkow took over the overall management.

3rd stage: team time trial, 73 km
The team time trial led over 73 km from Holguín to Las Tunas . The GDR, the reigning road team world champion, clearly won from the USSR and Mexico. In the overall team standings, the USSR defended the lead with eleven seconds.

4th stage: Las Tunas - Camagüey, 124 km
The stage from Las Tunas to Camagüey was determined by a top group of 14. The Czechoslovak Galik won the stage. Sergei Suchorutschenkow suffered a material defect , only crossed the finish line in the main draw with four minutes behind and thus lost the overall lead to Cuban Aldo Arencibia .

5th stage: Camagüey - Ciego de Ávila, 116 km
After a day of rest, 120 riders start the 116 km from Camagüey to Ciego de Ávila . The Cuban Torres won ahead of his compatriot Rivera.

6th stage: Ciego de Ávila - Topes de Collantes, 169 km
The stage from Ciego de Ávila to Topes de Collantes was a mountain stage. Sergej Morosow extended his lead in the mountain classification and won the stage ahead of the Cubans Perez and Aldo Arencibia . Mochow, who was just behind Arencibia in the overall standings, lost a lot of time, so that Cuban Perez took second place, 4:50 minutes behind.

7th stage: Trinidad - Cienfuegos, 90 km; Cienfuegos - Santa Clara, 68 km
The 7th stage was held in two days. The first section from Trinidad to Cienfuegos was won by Lutz Lötzsch from the GDR ahead of Alexander Kisljak from the USSR and Ireniusz Walczak from Poland. The second section from Cienfuegos to Santa Clara was secured by the Cuban Lazaros Santos from Walczak and his compatriot Carlos Cardet .
8th stage: Santa Clara - Cárdenas, 182 km
The eighth stage from Santa Clara to Cárdenas was secured by the Cuban Gustavo Vázquez ahead of Boris Isajew from the USSR and his compatriot Lázaro Santos.

9th stage: Mantanzas - Artemisa, 175 km
On the 175 km long stage from Matanzas by Artemisa , the quartet with the USSR drivers Sakharov and Kisljak, the Czechoslovak Galik and Andreas Petermann from the GDR had a lead of 90 seconds. Sakharov won out of the group.

10th stage: Artemisa - Pinar del Río, 127 km
The 10th stage led over 127 km from Artemisa to Pinar del Río . At kilometer 108 a quartet with the Cubans Juan Rivera and Orelvis Pedraza, the USSR driver Ramsan Galjaletdinow and Hans-Joachim Meisch from the GDR pulled away. At the finish they had 1:02 minutes ahead of the main field, Meisch took 2nd place. The total travel time was 2:59:25 minutes.
11th stage: Consolación - Havana, 188 km
The last stage from Consolación to Havana was 188 km at the same time as the longest stage of the tour. After 120 km a sextet withdrew. Walczak (Poland), Galik (Czechoslovakia), Petermann (GDR) as well as Orejon, Santos and Cardet (Cuba) saved 27 seconds at the finish. The Pole Walczak won the sprint.

Total individual
During this Cuba tour there were a total of three different overall leaders. For the longest time, seven stages, it was the eventual winner Aldo Arencibia . Sergei Suchorutschenkow started twice as overall leader (including the team time trial), Sergei Morozov was the front runner for one stage . For Aldo Arencibia it was the third overall victory in the tour after 1972 and 1976. 106 of the 124 drivers who started reached the finish in Havana.
