Kudankulam ( Tamil : கூடங்குளம் Kūṭaṅkuḷam [ ˈkuːɖʌŋɡuɭʌm ]; also Koodankulam ) is a place in the Tirunelveli district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . It is located on the coast of the Indian Ocean 70 kilometers south of the district capital Tirunelveli and 20 kilometers northeast of Kanyakumari , the southern tip of India, in the Taluk (sub-district) Radhapuram . The population is around 13,000 (2011 census).
The place is known for the Kudankulam nuclear power plant , which has been under construction since 2002. There are also hundreds of wind turbines for power generation, eight of which are located on the site of the nuclear power plant. These wind turbines currently have a total output of 2000 MW and represent one of the largest wind farms in India.
