Kudumiyamalai or Kudumiyan Malai ( Tamil குடுமியான்மலை ) is a village with about 2,500 inhabitants in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu .

location

Kudumiyamalai lies at an altitude of approx. 130 m above sea level. d. M. about 20 km west of the district capital Pudukkottai . The almost tropical climate is mostly humid; Rain falls mainly in the monsoon months October to December.

population

The residents of Kudumiyamalai are almost exclusively Hindus ; Members of other religions are rather rare among the rural population in South India. The female share of the population is slightly higher than the male.

economy

The inhabitants live almost exclusively from agriculture. Small traders and craftsmen have settled in the town center, who also benefit from the good transport links.

history

In the early Middle Ages, the area belonged to the Pallava Empire, which was gradually taken over by the regaining Chola Empire in the 9th century . In the 13th century, the Madurai- based Pandya dynasty took power, but gave it to the Vijayanagar Empire in the 14th century .

Attractions

  • To the north of the village there is an approx. 60 m high rock massif, in the lower zone of which a Shiva shrine was carved in the 9th or 10th century . This was later expanded to include several smaller and larger outdoor temples; one of them has a huge Vijayanagar-style mandapa .
  • The Murugai Temple , an open-air temple from the 13th century with an open and a closed vestibule, stands on the rocky plateau .
