features

Macroscopic features

The spherical gelatinous cup forms an apothecium, initially spherical to bulbous, brown in all parts, up to 6, sometimes up to 8 cm wide. Its outside is wrinkled to velvety. Its shiny hymenium forms quickly in the center of the apothecium and is slightly curved inward. The consistency is clearly gelatinous.

Microscopic features

The asci are cylindrical and are 340 to 370 µm long and 12.5 to 15 µm wide. The elliptical, hyaline, smooth spores are 24 to 30 × 9 to 11.5 µm in size. The paraphyses are thread-like and partially branched.

ecology

The gelatinous ball is saprophytic and grows especially in coniferous forests under spruce and fir trees . The fruiting bodies appear mainly in spring when the snow melts.

Spread and endangerment

The gelatinous sphere has an arctic-alpine distribution, but is very rare in Central Europe, but often occurs in large numbers at the site.

The species is listed under category 1 (threatened with extinction) on the Red List of Germany's large mushrooms . The Estonia Red List lists him as endangered. He has not been found in Switzerland since 1950 and is considered lost. It is also considered lost in Styria.
