Kasimir Christoph Schmidel

Kasimir Christoph Schmidel , also Casimir and Schmiedel (born November 21, 1718 in Bayreuth , † December 18, 1792 in Erlangen ) was a German doctor and botanist . His official botanical author name is " Schmidel ".

Life

Schmidel studied pharmacy and natural sciences in Gera , Halle and Jena . In 1742 he received his doctorate and initially worked as a general practitioner. Later he was appointed professor of pharmacology at the newly founded University of Bayreuth , after which he moved to Erlangen . On January 18, 1750 he was elected member ( matriculation number 561 ) of the Leopoldina with the academic surname Oribasius II .

In 1763 Schmidel was appointed personal physician to the Margrave of Ansbach ; however, he soon resigned from this position. As a naturalist, he then published Gesner's botanical estate.

A special achievement is the discovery of the antheridia and their function in liverworts .

Schmidel published the estate of the Swiss naturalist Conrad Gessner (1516–1565) under the title Conradi Gesneri Opera botanica ( 1751–1771 ).

Honors

After him, the plant genus Schmidelia is Boehm. from the family of Boraginaceae named (Boraginaceae).
