location

Millstone at the ball mill

The mill is located northeast of Bad Rappenau in the Zimmerhof district on the edge of the Kraichgau plateau and at the beginning of the Mühlbach valley, which cuts deep into the terrain on the slope to the Neckar, at an approximately 50 meter long Mühlkanal that branches off to the left of the Mühlbach. The water for the mill was also taken from the Tiefenbach, which was dammed a little west of the mill towards the Römersee . Parts of the mill ditches have been preserved to this day. Down the valley follows the Barthsmühle .

history

Portal stone of the ball mill, dated 1784

The mill was built around 1690 by Samuel Hess with a single grinder. In 1700 the mill was owned by Peter Dörtzbach, in 1712 by Johann Georg Wanner. The property, first known as Kugelmühle , in 1717 owned by the Hofmann family from Unterweissach, takes its name from the associated Kugelwiese . In the 18th century it was a ban mill for the town of Babstadt further south-west . In 1764 Johann Georg Eichele was a miller. The current building was rebuilt in 1784, the inscription stone above the portal commemorates the builder J (ohann) G (eorg) E (ichele) with his wife A (nna) S (ophia) E (ichele) and shows a symbolic mill wheel . Müller Johann Jacob Meyding († 1850) was mayor of Zimmerhof. In 1865 Johann Friedrich from Weiler bought the mill, which was expanded in 1885. His descendant, the miller Wilhelm Friedrich (1875–1951), also became mayor of Zimmerhof. Milling in the ball mill ended in 1958, and part of the mill equipment was then moved to the Maysack mill on the lower reaches of the Mühlbach. The last renovation took place in 1971. The daughter of the last miller set up a bar in the mill.
