The Römersee in the district of Zimmerhof , a district of Bad Rappenau in the Heilbronn district in northern Baden-Württemberg , is a reservoir and takes its name from the villa rustica located there .

geography

Foundations of the Villa Rustica near the Römersee

The Römersee is located northwest of Zimmerhof in the valley of the Tiefenbach, which is only slightly dug into the Kraichgau plateau . This springs forth from the northwest in hole wells at Siegelbach , running through a gently sloping valley resistant to the southeast and flows through to the Kohlhof nor the Römersee, shortly before its opening in the ball mill in the Mühlbach in the north to the Neckar afferent Five Mills .

The bank of the stream and most of the lake shore are covered with trees and bushes. Part of the Zimmerhofer golf course extends north of the lake, while fields extend south of the lake.

Villa rustica

Right on the north bank of the lake are the foundations of a Roman villa rustica , which was excavated in 1972 by the Baden-Württemberg State Monuments Office and restored in 1972/73. It is freely accessible to visitors, but not signposted.

Römersee Open Air

The area by the lake and around Villa rustica has been used for an annual open-air festival since 1981. In the 1980s and 1990s, mostly regional bands appeared. Since 2001, the Römersee Kulturverein eV has acted as the organizer, which until 2006 was chaired by Ulrich Schneider, who later became a member of the Bundestag . Under the auspices of the cultural association, attempts were initially made to organize the festival commercially, which made it possible because of bands such as Die Happy (2001), Mono für Alle! , Son Goku or FSK (2002) also received national attention. Since 2003, a mix of regional and national artists has been offered again with free admission. Over two days each year around 25 artists and groups performed on two stages. The more well-known bands of the last few years included Jamaram (2004), Passieroppel (2004), Hateclub (2006), Guts Pie Earshot (2007/2011), Headstone Epitaph (2007), Transmitter (2008/2010), Rainer von Bäumen (2008 / 2011), The Shanes (2009), The Prophecy 23 (2005/2008/2012), The Senior Allstars (2014) and Ouzo Bazooka (2016). In the last few years up to 5,000 visitors have been counted. From 2014 the festival should be held every two years. In 2015 and 2017, the club took a break. The planned Römersee Open Air 2018 had to be canceled at short notice. At the beginning of December 2018, the association was at a crossroads - liquidation or continuation under new management. Five new board members were elected for the general meeting in January, and they have been actively involved in the implementation of the Römersee Open Air 2019. The motto of the event is "Free entry - free camping - free thoughts".
