The villa rustica on the Römersee near Zimmerhof , a district of Bad Rappenau in the Heilbronn district in northern Baden-Württemberg , was an estate (a villa rustica ) at the time of the Roman Empire . Remains of the foundation walls of the main building of the manor have been preserved, some of which have been supplemented.

history

The manor was probably built in the second half of the second or early third century AD. The remains of his main building were discovered in 1971 and completely excavated in 1972 by the Baden-Württemberg State Monuments Office , as they were supposed to fall victim to land consolidation . After the excavation, the city of Bad Rappenau and the Sinsheim land consolidation office decided to restore the building instead. Since then, the site has been freely accessible to visitors.

investment

The main building of the manor, built on the southern slope of the Jungfrauenberg , was laid out in a rectangular shape around an inner courtyard. An inner colonnade ( peristyle ) was found in the western part of the courtyard . A cellar with a clay floor was located in the northwest, in the east there was a small rectangular extension with a hearth and a drainage channel, which served as a kitchen. A second extension in the south-east housed the combustion chamber for floor heating ( hypocaust ). Other simply furnished utility rooms were located in the east and north wings of the building and in the south-east of the inner courtyard. In the south wing, which is 3.3  m below the level of the north wing due to the hillside location, there were representative, colorfully plastered living rooms, including a heated, 16 × 4 m hall. Simpler living rooms without heating and with simple plaster were found in the west and north wings.

The north and west wings, especially the basement in the northwest, had been best preserved. They were therefore restored and provided with new screed floors . The south and east wing of the building and the extensions in the east and south-east have been indicated by stone slabs since the restoration.
