Kuhmalahti [ ˈkuhmɑlɑhti ] ( Swedish Kuhmalax ) is a former municipality in the Finnish countryside of Pirkanmaa . In early 2011 she was incorporated into the Kangasala community .

Kuhmalahti is 37 kilometers east of the center of Kangasala on the eastern shore of Lake Längelmävesi . The municipality of Kuhmalahti had an area of 220.7 square kilometers (of which 52.2 square kilometers inland water). The seat of the municipal administration was the place Pohja, the church village of the municipality is the place Iso-Pento. The last population of Kuhmalahti was 1,041. The Kylmäkoski community was monolingual in Finnish . Like many rural areas in Finland, Kuhmalahti has suffered from depopulation and aging for decades. In 1960 the community still had more than 2,000 inhabitants.

Kuhmalahti originally belonged to the Kangasala parish . Around 1640 it became a chapel parish , which was subordinated to Sahalahti in 1896 . In 1901 Kuhmalahti became an independent parish. The simple wooden church of Kuhmalahti was built from 1845 to 1846 according to plans by EB Lohrmann , the free-standing bell tower dates back to the previous building erected between 1780 and 1782. Vehkajärvi has its own church, which was built in 1841 by the villagers based on a drawing by Benjamin Helen. Several of the places in the municipality still have wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries and are listed in the Finnish monument register as a cultural landscape worthy of protection.

The coat of arms of Kuhmalahti was designed in 1961 by the heraldist Gustaf von Numers . The blazon reads: In the red shield there is an overturned silver tip with a red flame.
