Kukruse (German Kuckers ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the Estonian district of Ida-Viru . It belongs to the rural municipality of Kohtla . Kukruse has 58 inhabitants.

history

The Kukruse silver hoard points to the Viking Age .

In the 1870s, oil shale was one of the first places in the world to be mined. During the energy crisis in 1916, the oil shale was developed industrially. Kukruse gave the kuckersite , a flammable oil shale sediment , its name.

After the Second World War there was a Soviet prisoner of war camp for former members of the Wehrmacht in Kukruse . In 1998 a German prisoner-of-war cemetery was inaugurated in a forest area northeast of the town.

Manor

Classified as a manor (mentioned in 1453 for the first time) of Kukruse manor owned by Kukruse ( Kukruse mõis ) came in 1762 in the possession of the German Baltic family of Toll . In 1919 the estate was expropriated by the Estonian state.

The manor house in classical style and the outbuildings date from the second half of the 19th century in their current form. An avenue of oaks leads to the manor house, which is surrounded by a forest park.
