The village is best known for the Valaste juga , a waterfall that, at 30.5 meters, is the highest in Estonia . The first written mention of the waterfall dates back to 1840, when the German-Baltic magazine Das Inland, published in Tartu , described it as a natural wonder.

The waterfall is located between the Ontika manor and the western outskirts of Valaste. There, not far from the Baltic Sea beach, the water from a drainage ditch created around 200 years ago falls over the steep northern edge of the limestone plateau on which the northern part of Ida-Virumaa extends. In winter, natural ice sculptures form there in strong sea winds and suddenly falling temperatures. The waterfall is a popular tourist destination in the region.
