History and sights

Ontika was first mentioned in 1241 in the Liber Census Daniæ . In 1430 Ontika was registered as the property of the Bailiff of Narva . As a result of the Livonian War (1558–1583), Ontika was completely destroyed and abandoned. The Ontika manor was first mentioned in 1677. From 1780 it belonged to the Baltic noble family Clapier de Colongue .

The late classicist two-story main building was built in 1855. It is only 50 meters from the coast of the Gulf of Finland . In 1919 the owners were expropriated as part of the Estonian land reform . The historic mansion fell into disrepair in later years, but remained a tourist attraction of Ontika.

In 2011 the property was acquired by the Finnish skier Kalle Palander and converted into a hotel in the following years.

The steep coast of Ontika is a popular excursion destination and research object for geologists . The cliff ( called klint in Estonian ) is the highest in northern Estonia with up to 55.6 m. A geotouristic attraction near Ontika is the Valaste waterfall , where the water from a drainage ditch created almost 200 years ago plunges around 30 meters into the depth. The area has been under special protection as the Ontika landscape protection area ( Ontika maastikukaitseala ) since 1935.

reception

In 2009 a novel was published with the title "Ontika: Das Vermächtnis des Drachen" (Boje-Verlag) by Manfred Theisen , who has processed both Estonian cultural history and the town of Ontika himself in a fantasy novel. Ontika is the place where the elves live. In a reading, Manfred Theisen stated that he was inspired by the real place Ontika.
