Hainburg culture factory

The Kulturfabrik Hainburg is an exhibition center and an archaeological depot in Hainburg an der Donau in Lower Austria .

Emergence

The area on which the culture factory is located lies outside the largely preserved city walls of Hainburg and was repeatedly inundated by the floods of the Danube . Due to the Danube traffic route, the tobacco factory was founded in 1724 and nationalized as the Austrian Tobacco Directorate in 1784 . In 1847 the largest factory building, now adapted as a culture factory, and known as the Danube building, was built.

Until the beginning of the 20th century, cigars and cigarettes were made here by hand. In 1905 the kuk main tobacco factory reached its peak with 2,500 employees. At the tobacco factory there was also a stop for the Pressburg Railway , which is also used today for the S7 .

In 1964 production in the tobacco factory of Austria Tabak was stopped. Owned by PTG - Production for the Tobacco Industry Company , production was resumed in 1977, but in 1992 it was finally shut down and the building was empty. In the ownership of the state, the building was extensively renovated and adapted from 2005 and an event center was created.

The former industrial building has belonged to the state of Lower Austria since 2005.

Use today

The Kulturfabrik is only about 100 meters from the ship docking station, but also not far from the city center. The entire area can therefore be used for tourism. In 2011 the Kulturfabrik was one of the three locations of the Lower Austrian State Exhibition . The former factory hall with 700 m² is used for exhibitions. A depot as well as scientific rooms for processing the archaeological finds in the nearby Carnuntum excavation area are housed on three floors . But other excavation finds are also examined and restored here.

Individual rooms are also rented out separately for events.
