The Meiningen-Eisenach Cultural Foundation is a non-profit foundation under civil law and is based in the southern Thuringian district town of Meiningen .

The foundation was established in 1997 with the task of managing, promoting and maintaining the most important cultural institutions in the city of Meiningen under one roof. The initiator of the foundation was the then director of the Meininger Theater, Ulrich Burkhardt . The city of Meiningen and the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen each contributed 10% and the Free State of Thuringia with 80% of the total costs. Since January 1st, 2009 the State Theater Eisenach with the Landeskapelle Eisenach has been part of the Meiningen Cultural Foundation, which has since been known as the Meiningen-Eisenach Cultural Foundation . The sponsoring institutions of the Meiningen-Eisenach Cultural Foundation are currently the city of Meiningen, the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen, the Free State of Thuringia and, since 2013, the city of Eisenach and the Wartburg district . On August 1, 2017 the Landeskapelle Eisenach was removed from the cultural foundation.

The Free State of Thuringia occupies the position of Chairman of the Foundation Council, which is held by the State Secretary in the Thuringian Ministry of Education, Science and Culture (currently Benjamin-Immanuel Hoff). The board is made up of local representatives from politics and culture who do their work on a voluntary basis. Ina Bauche currently heads the board. The responsible supervisory authority is the Thuringian foundation supervisory authority . The respective theater director and museum director are responsible for managing the individual foundation areas.

In addition to the maintenance and restoration of valuable cultural assets such as paintings or historical stage sets, as well as the operation of the cultural sites, the task of the foundation includes the definition of managerial staff in the directorship and management.
