Life

He then worked as a music dramaturge in Leipzig and Berlin and continued to be a reviewer for the newspaper “ Theater der Zeit ”. After a stay in Yugoslavia in 1985, he left the GDR and moved to what was then the Federal Republic . From 1985 to 1990 Burkhardt worked as a dramaturge at the theaters in Bielefeld and Kassel .

From 1990 Ulrich Burkhardt was director of the Meininger Theater . In the following years he brought the traditional house, which was isolated from the theater world during the GDR era, back to the top of East German theaters. In 1991 he opened the studio stage "Georgie's Off" (today: Neue Kammerspiele ) at the theater . In 1997 he was the initiator of the founding of the Meiningen Cultural Foundation .

Burkhardt was able to win numerous well-known directors, authors and composers to work at the Meininger Theater. these included Klaus Maria Brandauer , Loriot , August Everding , Brigitte Fassbaender , Mikis Theodorakis , Ephraim Kishon , Gunther Emmerlich and Angelica Domröse . He brought the Berliner Philharmoniker under Claudio Abbado and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig with Kurt Masur to Meiningen for concerts .

In addition to traditional classical works, Burkhardt also brought a number of avant-garde experiments and popular musicals to the program . Thanks to the enormous increase in the quality of the theater he achieved, he was able to win back the audience from the neighboring states of Hesse ( Fulda area ) and Bavaria ( Lower Franconia ), which had already visited the Meiningen Theater before the Wall was built.

In the summer of 1997 Ulrich Burkhardt was killed in a tragic traffic accident on a country road near Strausberg in Brandenburg . Christine Mielitz continued his work at the theater a little later .
