action

The Romanian Johann Bartisch lives in the 250 year old school in the Thuringian village of Arnsgereuth . More than 30 years ago he came to the GDR from Bucharest , where he was already enjoying the mechanical jukeboxes as a young boy . As these jukeboxes lost their function due to the proliferation of radios and records , they disappeared from everyday life. Later Johann wandered around for a long time, looking for and finding them in barns and cellars, in warehouses and garbage dumps, where he was often accompanied by children of the village who then saw how they were made to sound again by Johann.

One of the children is 12-year-old Gerd from the neighboring farm, who Johann visits almost every day. Now the two friends repair the machines together and enjoy their sound when they work again. When Gerd's parents come home from the LPG at the end of the day , Gerd has to part with the musical instruments with a heavy heart, because now the work is waiting for him in the domestic stable, where pigs, cows, goats and other animals are.

When Johann receives a visitor from Romania one day, he plays the favorite song from his childhood on the piano and his visitor accompanies him on a violin. Since his front door is open to everyone, other visitors arrive immediately, who can also see the machine music that he and Gerd explain together. Johann is popular throughout the village. The children collect wood for him so that he and the instruments are warm in winter and sometimes the neighbors bring him something to eat. The youngsters also like to come to him, especially in winter when they can sit around his warm stove. There are no problems, because they already know Johann from their earliest childhood.
