Rainer M. Schulz (* 1946 in Schlotheim ) is a German cameraman .

Life

Rainer M. Schulz was born in Schlotheim / Thuringia in 1946 and spent his childhood and youth here. After graduating from high school in 1965, he acquired an engineering diploma for acoustics at the Technical University of Dresden in 1970 and worked in East Berlin as a noise protection engineer at the Building Academy of the GDR .

From 1970 to 1976 he studied to be a cameraman at the College for Film and Television of the GDR in Potsdam- Babelsberg . For the next six years, from 1976 to 1981, he worked as a freelance image designer and photographer in East Berlin, until in 1981 he was employed as a film cameraman at the DEFA studio for documentary films . After its dissolution, he filmed from 1991 to 1995 as a freelance cameraman and also as a director cameraman. From 1995 to 2008 he was appointed professor for documentary camera work at the HFF in Potsdam-Babelsberg. Thereafter exclusively freelance work as a cameraman and photographer.

In his work to date, Rainer M. Schulz has photographed around 80 documentaries and a few short films. He has worked for all of the documentary genres that have taken him around the world. His specialties are essays, portraits and reports. Films he photographed won top prizes at festivals in Amsterdam, Leipzig, Moscow, Oberhausen, Munich, Wismar and Marl.

Rainer M. Schulz realized many productions in close collaboration with the director Dieter Schumann - including Wadans Welt , for which Rainer M. Schulz was honored with the German Camera Prize in Cologne in 2011 in the documentary / docudrama category.

Schulz is the father of a son from his first marriage and is married to the teacher Edeltraut Bastian in his third marriage. He lives in Berlin.
