history

The first initiative to create a socio-cultural center in Reutlingen dates back to 1983 and resulted in the establishment of Café Nepomuk as a "small solution". A cultural center with subsidies from public funds could not be implemented at the time. The Nepomuk started in a small corner bar with an eight-person founding collective who wanted to realize life and work in self-administration and to combine café, culture and politics without suitable rooms and subsidies.

The Café Nepomuk was able to expand significantly in 1993 by moving to the restaurant within the former Foyer Cinema of the French garrison - the building that is now "French K" after the renovation.

The founding impulse for the new center finally came from the culture crew of Nepomuk. Parallel to the cultural development and expansion in the café rooms, u. a. free theater groups as well as the jazz club and the cabaret the former cinema hall in the building. These originally seven, later six independent groups (the Nepomuk Kulturverein, the Kleinkunstbühne Reutlingen, the Jazzclub In der Mitte and the independent theaters Sturmvogel , figuren theater tübingen and Varietétheater Weltenhopser) worked together from 2002 on to implement the plans for an innovative and diverse cultural center in the building "Unter den Linden 23".

After the Reutlingen referendum voted “No” about the culture and congress center in the same year, for the first time in years there were concrete opportunities for a culture center with a broad and everyday concept of culture. The jointly conceived music-theater-cabaret festival under the title “Schad 'Nix” became the start of the campaign, which was perceived nationwide at the beginning of 2003. After years of persuading the public and committees, a socio-cultural center in the foyer U3 (KU3) was decided in 2006 as part of the Reutlingen cultural conception and initiated with priority. As a result of a survey of all Reutlingen cultural institutions and initiatives, the cultural conception recommended, in addition to the construction of a new, albeit slimmer and better-designed city hall and a theater center, the expansion of the U3 foyer into a socio-cultural center as a central cultural-political project. In the course of the specific planning, the name “KU3” finally became “French K - cultural center in the old French cinema” after a thorough examination of over 70 suggested names.
