The Kultusamt is an office established in the Federal Chancellery which, as the highest cultural authority, has to implement the state religious regulations in Austria . These include in particular the decisions on applications for the registration of religious denominations and the recognition of churches and religious communities , with the effect that they then have the status of a corporation under public law (Austria) . The Kultusamt was part of the Ministry of Education until 2014 .

organization

The Kultusamt does not belong to any section in the BKA; four people work in it. It is divided into section a , (responsible for matters of the Catholic Church and the other churches and religious societies (except for the Protestant Church) and interdenominational religious matters; parts of the federal law on the legal personality of religious denominational communities; general legal and legal matters) and the section b (responsible for affairs of the Protestant Church ; parts of the federal law on the legal personality of religious denominational communities).

Proposed upgrade

In January 2015, Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz suggested upgrading the Office of Culture to an "operational religious authority" which, in particular with regard to the Islamic Law, also had control rights, e.g. B. should get in mosques . This proposal was rejected by representatives of the Muslims on the grounds that Kurz wanted to install a "religious police". In August 2017, following criticism from Foreign Minister Kurz about failures in the controls under the Islamic Law (responsible for the Federal Chancellery under Christian Kern ), the responsible State Secretary Muna Duzdar suggested upgrading the Office of Education financially, in terms of personnel and also with regard to competencies.
