Muna Duzdar (born August 22, 1978 in Vienna ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and a self-employed lawyer . From 2010 to 2012 she was a member of the Austrian Federal Council , from 2012 to 2016 a member of the Vienna State Parliament and a member of the Vienna City Council and from 2016 to 2017 she was State Secretary for Diversity, Public Service and Digitization in the Federal Chancellery of the Federal Government Kern .

education and profession

Duzdar attended elementary school in Vienna from 1984 to 1988 and then, from 1988 to 1996, a Vienna secondary school. After graduating from high school , she studied law at the University of Vienna between 1996 and 2004 , completing her studies with the academic degree Mag. Iur . From 2005 to 2006, she also completed a master's degree in international law / law of the Arab countries at the Sorbonne University in Paris. Duzdar passed the bar exam on November 9, 2011 and has been working as a freelance lawyer since November 2012.

During her studies, Duzdar worked from 1999 to 2001 as legal secretary at the Austrian Tenants' Association , after which she worked as an international secretary for the Socialist Youth Austria between 2000 and 2004 . From 2004 to 2005 she completed an internship at the European Parliament with MEP Herbert Bösch (SPÖ) and was active as a foreign language assistant in Livry-Gargan and Clichy-sous-Bois between 2005 and 2006 during her master’s degree . From 2005 to 2006 she then did administrative work in the Parti Socialiste in Paris.

Politics and functions

Duzdar was a district councilor in Vienna- Donaustadt between 2001 and 2004 and was sworn in as a federal councilor on January 28, 2010 . Within the SPÖ Federal Council Club, she assumed the role of area spokesperson for foreign policy. She was a member of the Committee on Labor, Social Affairs and Consumer Protection, a member of the Justice Committee, secretary or deputy chairman of the committee for foreign affairs, member or secretary of the committee for sports affairs and a member of the incompatibility committee. On November 18, 2012, she resigned from the Federal Council and moved to the Vienna State Parliament and City Council, where she was sworn in on November 19, 2012 and succeeded Karin Schrödl .

Duzdar describes foreign policy, education, integration as well as housing and building policy as her political priorities.

On May 17, 2016, Muna Duzdar was convened as future State Secretary in the Federal Chancellery . She took over the "Administration and Public Service" division from Sonja Steßl and was also entrusted with the topics of diversity and digitization. Along with Thomas Drozda , Sonja Hammerschmid and Jörg Leichtfried, she was one of the four new members of the government under the sworn in Chancellor Christian Kern on May 17, 2016, who succeeded Werner Faymann , who resigned on May 9, 2016, both as Chancellor and as SPÖ party chairman.

In the 2017 National Council election , Muna Duzdar won a mandate from the Vienna State List. After the National Council election in 2019 , she left the National Council.

Private

Duzdar is the daughter of Palestinian immigrants , her father was an employee of the UNIDO , her mother a housewife. She has five siblings. Her mother tongues are German and Arabic. According to her own statements, she is a non-practicing Muslim and was the first member of an Austrian government of the Second Republic to belong to this religious community.

Muna Duzdar was president of the Palestinian-Austrian Society (PÖG) until at least May 2016 .
