The Kumpf (from Latin Cumba , Old High German Kump , also Schlotterfass ) is a quiver-like container for a whetstone , which is also known in the trade as a "whetstone cup". In the Sauerland the term "Schlocker" is common. Low German variants are: Schlucker, Schlüaker or Schliaker.

description

For regular sharpening ( "sharpening") of scythes , views and sickles when mowing grass or grain that needs reapers a whetstone. This is carried in a container specially made for this purpose, the Kump, which is either hung around the body or on the belt.

The whetstone is kept wet in order to avoid undesirable hardening of the heat-sensitive steel blades due to the frictional heat generated on the cutting edge during dry grinding and also to facilitate sharpening . For this purpose, the mostly conically shaped body can be filled with water. So that the stone does not fall out while moving and the water stays in the kump, the open kump can be clogged with grass or straw when mowing.

Typical traditional materials for making a fuselage are leather , horn , sheet metal or wood - but the latter has to be kept permanently moist to prevent it from tearing and subsequent leaks.

Origin of the name "Schlotterfass"

The container "wobbled" on the belt of the mower , an employee of the grain harvest .
