Kundalpur ( Hindi कुण्डलपुर ) is a village with around 1,750 inhabitants and an important pilgrimage site for the Jains in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh .
location
The village of Kundalpur is located on the western edge of a foothill of the Vindhya Mountains at an altitude of approx. 350 m above sea level. d. M .; some of the Jain temples are 50 m higher. The district capital Damoh is about 36 km (driving distance) to the southwest. The climate is warm and, by Indian standards, quite rainy, with around 90% of the precipitation falling during the summer monsoon season.

About 85% of the villagers are Hindus ; Jains are represented with around 10%. Muslims and other religious groups form only numerically small minorities. As is customary in northern India, the proportion of the male population is around 10% higher than the female population.
history
Not much is known about the earlier history of the place - according to tradition, three of the eleven students of the sect founder Mahavira were born here. The oldest of the more than 60 Jain temples, however, date from the 18th century; however, it can be assumed that the place was already used by monks before.
Attractions
The main temple and several side shrines are dedicated to the first Tirthankara Rishabha / Adinath (also known here under the name Bade Baba ). In temple no. 22, an approx. 5 m tall seated figure of the spiritual guide is venerated , whose hands are interlocked in the meditation gesture ( dhyanamudra ) in the lap.
