Kämper came as the son of the factory owner Karl Kämper and his wife Ella, nee. Gembruch, to the world. He started school at Easter 1928 and attended elementary school up to seventh grade. Then his parents decided to send him to high school. He worked on the curriculum of classes I-III and passed the entrance exam for the fourth class of the Zeppelin high school in Lüdenscheid at Easter 1935.

In January 1940 he was drafted into the air force and promoted to officer in 1943. In the winter semester of 1943/44 he was given leave to study at the Technical University of Dresden . After his discharge from the Wehrmacht in May 1945, he began practical training for further studies. In the summer semester of 1946 he was admitted to the Technical University of Hanover . There he passed the preliminary diploma examination in 1948 and the main examination in manufacturing and machine tool engineering in 1950. After the main examination, at the suggestion of his professor Otto Kienzle, he received a scholarship from the Emergency Association of German Science , which enabled him to carry out research on press fits. He completed this work in 1952 at the Institute for Machine Tools at the TH Hannover. The results flowed into his doctoral thesis The adhesive forces in conical press fits , which he presented in August 1954 in Hanover.

Entrepreneurial activities

Even before his doctorate as Dr.-Ing. he joined his father's company, Lenzkämper GmbH & Co. KG Drahtformtechnik in Lüdenscheid, and has been a co-owner since 1954. He made the first contacts with the automotive industry, which led to orders for the VW Beetle in the 1960s . Under his aegis, seat belts were manufactured for Daimler-Benz at the end of the 1950s , and in the early 1970s the development of deflection fittings for seat belts, which were used in the first VW Golf , began. The company, founded in 1920, is owned by the founding families Karin L. Lenz and Kuno Kämper.
