The building of the former arts and crafts school at Burgplatz 1 in Düsseldorf now forms part of the town hall building . The Düsseldorf School of Applied Arts existed here from 1883 to 1919 .

In 1875, the city of Düsseldorf received the property of the old picture gallery from the Prussian state , which was located between the town hall and the old castle and had been used by the Düsseldorf Art Academy since 1819 . Most of the old castle burned down and burned down in March 1872. The gallery, which was also used by the art academy, was largely intact during the major fire. After the art academy had received a new domicile with a neo-Renaissance building at the security harbor by 1879, the way was clear for the establishment of a school of arts and crafts , the statute of which the minister responsible issued on February 28, 1882 after several years of negotiations. The running costs of the school, which opened on April 3, 1883, were borne by the city of Düsseldorf, the state initially granted an annual grant of 7,830 marks, which was increased to 30,000 marks annually by 1900. In addition, the state granted a one-off construction cost subsidy of 225,000 marks for repair and new construction measures.

The new building was built by Eberhard Westhofen in the historicist neo -renaissance style until 1883 . Ashlar was used for highlighted architectural parts on the street fronts . The facade is otherwise faced with yellow brick , especially in the inner courtyard facing the town hall . The rounded corner is particularly emphasized by a three-axis corner project , which was structured with a steep hipped roof and a decorated gable when the building was completed. The building was simplified after being destroyed in the Second World War. The steep hipped roof and the ornamental gable were omitted during the reconstruction in the post-war period. The building, which is now a listed building and which is partly used for the "Academy Gallery" of the Düsseldorf Art Academy, is located on the corner of Burgplatz and Rathausufer .
